Indoor Plant Care in the UAE
Most houseplants ask for the same few things — the right light, a sensible drink and a little humidity. Indoors in the UAE the balance simply shifts: cooler, brighter and clear of the air conditioning. Here are the essentials, followed by a note for every plant we grow.

Six things every plant wants.

Get the light right
Most houseplants want bright, indirect light — near a window but out of the harsh afternoon sun that scorches leaves. Easy-going types like the peace lily and ZZ plant will happily take a shadier corner.

Water only when needed
Feel the top few centimetres of soil and water only once it’s dry — roughly weekly in the warmer months, less in winter. Always let the excess drain away. Sitting in wet soil is the single most common way to lose a plant.

Lift the humidity
Air conditioning dries the air, which plants dislike. Mist the leaves, stand pots on a damp pebble tray, or group plants together to raise humidity — a real help for calatheas, ferns and orchids indoors.

Keep them clear of the AC
A direct cold draught stresses and dries a plant fast. Position yours away from air-conditioning vents and out of full, direct sun — cool and bright, not blasted and baked.

Feed in the growing season
Through spring and summer, feed monthly with a balanced houseplant food (or orchid food for orchids). Ease right off in the cooler months, when growth naturally slows.

Keep the leaves clean
Wipe dust from the foliage now and then so it can breathe and stay glossy, and glance at the undersides while you’re there to catch any pests early.

Your Calathea rewards a little care with beautifully patterned foliage. Give it bright, indirect light — never direct sun, which fades the colours. Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy, watering once the top layer dries. It dislikes hard tap water and dry air, so use filtered or left-to-stand water and raise humidity with regular misting or a pebble tray — essential in air-conditioned UAE homes.
